Getting Started

What people usually ask us.

How do I get started with scoliosis bracing?

Book an assessment with your nearest accredited fitter. They will carry out a postural and spinal evaluation, confirm whether bracing is suitable, and recommend a brace and treatment plan tailored to your curve, age and lifestyle. See our Process page for the full five-step journey.

Does wearing a scoliosis brace hurt?

A correctly fitted brace should not be painful. Some mild discomfort or adjustment is normal in the first few days as you and your body get used to it. If a brace is causing ongoing pain, pressure sores or skin irritation, contact your fitter for an adjustment rather than reducing wear time on your own.

How many hours a day does a brace need to be worn?

Wear time depends on the brace type and your specific treatment plan. SpineCor is typically worn full-time, while CMP is generally worn around 20 hours a day with a daily allowance for sport or therapy. Your fitter will confirm the exact schedule that applies to your brace and curve.

Can my child still play sport while wearing a brace?

In many cases, yes. SpineCor is designed to allow more natural movement than rigid braces, and most brace systems build in time away from the brace for sport or physical activity. Discuss your child’s specific activities with their fitter so the wear schedule and any brace breaks are planned around them.

Is scoliosis bracing covered by medical aid?

Cover varies by scheme and plan. Some medical aids offer a benefit toward orthotic devices, though this is not guaranteed and depends on your specific option and available limits. Confirm coverage and any required codes directly with your medical aid before starting treatment, and ask your fitter for the documentation they need from you.

How do I find an accredited fitter near me?

Visit our Find a Fitter page and select your province. Every fitter listed is an AHPCSA-registered chiropractor and accredited SpineCor brace fitter, practising independently across the Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape.

Which brace is right for me — SpineCor, CMP or TechnoSpine?

It depends on your age, curve type and curve magnitude. SpineCor suits growing children with idiopathic curves; CMP is a rigid over-correcting brace generally used from around 25 degrees upward; TechnoSpine is built specifically for adult degenerative or adult-onset scoliosis. Compare all three on our Bracing page, and your fitter will confirm the right option at assessment.

How long does scoliosis bracing treatment take?

For adolescents, bracing typically continues through the remaining growth period, with regular follow-ups to track the curve and adjust the brace as needed. Adult bracing is usually managed differently, focused on posture and pain rather than a fixed growth-linked timeline. Your fitter will set expectations specific to your case at your first assessment.
